Using URL parameters to append information to surveys
With Survey Anyplace, you are able to include parameters in the survey’s URL (weblink); this is useful in following situations:
- When you want to automatically fill in specific fields in the Intro Screen of the survey with default values.
- When you want to append information to a survey, which can later be used when analyzing the results.
1 Default values on the Intro Screen
To set default values for the Intro Screen, you append the URL with the parameters in the following way:
http://surveyanyplace.com/s/surveyname/?cf1=custom field 1 default value &cf2=custom field 2 default value&cf3=custom field 3 default value
The bold parts are variables.
This URL will default the values in the Intro Screen as shown below. Make sure you’ve provided enough Custom Fields to show the values.
2 Append information to a survey without showing the information on the Intro Screen
To append information to a survey without showing the information on the Intro Screen, you can use the same type of URL and include parameters for fields that are not visible on the Intro Screen. You don’t have to provide a Custom Field when you don’t want to show the value on the Intro Screen.
http://surveyanyplace.com/s/surveyname/?cf1=custom field 1 default value &cf2=custom field 2 default value&cf3=custom field 3 default value&cf4=custom field 4 default value
The bold parts are variables
Take following example: let’s assume that you want to use Survey Anyplace to do a store check using iPads: every employee has his/her iPad to check multiple stores. The employee needs to enter the store ID in the Intro Screen of the survey. Therefore, you add a Custom Field in the survey Intro Screen called ‘Store ID’:
However, you want to avoid that the employee has to enter his/her employee ID on the Intro Screen of each survey. You can do this by putting following type of link on the home screen of the employee’s iPad:
where ID48584 is the employee ID of the particular employee, which is not visible and does not need to be filled in on the Intro Screen of the survey. Only the store ID is visible on the Intro Screen and needs to be filled by the employee.
In the survey results however, the employee ID is available for analysis as Custom Field 2 (cf2).
The same technique can be used to append an identification code to the URL when inviting people for surveys through e-mails, social media, a link inside a website or QR codes.
